 "First HD television, more than pleased" 2010-01-21
By Matt (MS)
So I bought this television in late November along with my Sony Bravia surround sound home theater system. When I first turned it on, I was blown away. Even the "no signal" was crystal clear ( I could tell then I had the right television.) Putting it together was easy as well. Four screws down, four in the back, and you're done. The Directv man came by the next day, hooked up my HD satellite receiver, once again, blown away. The picture is amazing! Watching sports now are amazing! Movies on both the satellite receiver and on my Samsung BD-P1600 blu-ray player have outstanding output on this television. The sound is pretty much that of SD televisions, but I have read that most HD televisions are like this. No problem, because once you hook this bad baby up to a surround sound system, you can pretty much hit the mute button. The picture is the most important thing, although the sound on the tv is good.

You can set a certain picture and calibration to each input running to the television. I love tinkering with this feature. I have:

HDMI 1-satellite receiver- natural

HDMI 2- surround sound receiver- dynamic

HDMI 3- blu-ray player- BD Wise/Movie

HDMI 4- PS3- natural (sometimes dynamic)

Playing video games on this thing are amazing. I love playing Madden 10 and NBA Live 10 and the tv output will blow you away.

I have HDMI cables running from each input to this television and an optical cable running to the surround sound receiver. I also have a wireless LAN adapter hooked up to it, which allows me to get News, stock quotes, and the weather. I can even hook up my laptop to it if I wanted to. Switching between sources is so easy. Hit the source button,and navigate away. This tv blows me away every time I watch it. It even has a cool sound when I turn it on and off. Don't forget that extended warranty if you invest in this television.

 "It's a Samsung!" 2009-12-31
By C. Quinn (PA, USA)
This TV is just what you'd expect from Samsung: spectacular. I've always loved Samsung displays, but I'm here to give a non-biased review, so here you go...

I did a lot of research on various TVs before making my mind up on this one. I picked it up at Best Buy since I didn't want to deal with shipping.

WOW.

PROS:

------------

+ Awesome contrast ratio. The blacks are deliciously deep. You can hardly see any bleed at all even with the contrast and brightness up very high. Looks comparable to the edge-lit LED TVs.

+ XBOX 360/PS3 looks gorgeous on this. Period.

+ Stand is glass and very sturdy/thick. TV is attached to a spindle on top of the stand by 8 screws. It rotates but cannot pitch or tilt.

+ Menu system is beautiful and easy to navigate/read.

+ AutoMotion looks SWEET for Sports. I like it for movies, but some people don't because it makes motion look like a soap opera. You can adjust it as much as you want though, and even disable it.

+ Controller is full-featured with large easy-to-read buttons. People with fat thumbs will love this.

+ Has a built-in ethernet port for network connectivity.

+ This TV recognizes USB flash drives and adds them to the input source menu! It has it's own media browser that looks similar to Windows Media Center. You can watch videos, listen to music and view pictures from pretty much any removable storage plugged into the side-mounted USB port. It even plays huge 1920x1080 .MKV files!

CONS:

--------------

+ Lack of pitch and tilt in the stand is disappointing, but my old Samsung stand didn't even rotate, so I'm not complaining.

+ AutoMotion on High can choke and tear/stutter at times during high-movement scenes in movies and such. Most of the time it looks spectacular though.

+ TV speakers are mediocre (hook up that surround sound system!)

+ Menu system feels sluggish. If you've ever used a Motorola cable box (the ones Comcast/Verizon give you), you know exactly what I mean.

+ You must disable AutoMotion for gaming as the processing creates a slight delay between the input and output to the screen. Basically your controller inputs will have a ~50ms delay. It's small, but definitely a disadvantage for games like shooters and racing.

CONCLUSION:

--------------

If you're looking for a spectacular TV that works with everything, feels perfect in a medium-sized room and doesn't empty your wallet, this is it. If you just don't want to dish out the money for an LED TV, get this. The black levels are -seriously- deep. The only real advantage LED has over CCFL TVs right now are the slimmer panel sizes (for edge-lit LED TVs). You wont see much of a difference between LED and this unless you compare it to a more-expensive LED TV that has Local Dimming (the LEDs can be dimmed/turned completely off in dark parts of the screen for a truly black blacks.) If you're debating CCFL vs. LED and decide to go LED, you really should get one with Local Dimming.

I'm incredibly thrilled with my purchase. If you don't want to deal with shipping, Best Buy has these for $999, but the downside is paying tax.

Oh, and when you do pick yours up, try watching the launch scene from Apollo 13 with Tom Hanks in HD with AutoMotion on. It'll make you weep tears of sweet, sweet joy.

i got this tv for a great deal, for 900$ when it was on sale on amazon. anyways.. all i have to say is this tv is really awesome, the picture quality is beautiful, the tv itself looks fantastic, and its made by samsung a very trusted company that makes excellence tv's. before purchasing this tv online, i was super afraid to buy such an expensive tv online, but it was such a great deal, i saw at bestbuys they sell the same thing for 1100$ with tax and everything which is a complete rip, but i was scared that the tv would come in broken or have problems but nope it came in perfectly fine. also before purchasing the tv i read that this tv had some problems and was defective, all i can say is i had this tv for about 8 months now and i use it everyday for hours and nothings happened to it , this tv is so awesome. i reallyreally love this tv its so awesome when playing xbox. :D 5/5 great job samsung.

 "best buy" 2009-12-30
By Igor T (Frederick, MD)
This is an amazing TV set. Vivid colors, high resolution, good sound, easy to handle. 2 USB ports are very useful. Due to them and to corresponding software this TV set plays slideshow and movies in any DVD/DvxX format without an additional DVD player. The delivery was quick and accurate. One of my best buys in the electronic department.

 "Arrived DOA - will update Review when I get a replacement" 2009-12-10
By Jen Borucki (Boston, MA)
This was originally a one star review - read below.

12/14/09 UPDATE to 4 stars:

TL;DR version: TV was DOA on arrival - contacted Samsung+Amazon and TV was swapped out and set up in my home within two days of original day of death. Very impressed with Both Amazon and CEVA (the Shipper). Oh, and the TV is pretty great too.

So, when we last left off, Amazon's A+ customer service agreed to swap out the TV since it was DOA. The phone call to them was super quick and they told me that *they* would contact CEVA and have CEVA pick up the bad TV and deliver the new TV. CEVA would then call me to set up a new delivery time. This all happened on a Thursday and I expected that I this probably would take at least a week to fully get resolved. I got a call Friday from CEVA and they said that they could deliver the next day - Saturday and they had upgraded me to white glove service (free setup). So less than 48 hours later - I had a new working TV in my home - talk about impressive customer service coming from two different companies that have to work in conjunction with each other.

I had mentioned that after reading the online tech support reviews on this product, I had some second thoughts about agreeing to a swap-out. Amazon moved to quick for me to even make that decision. I still have concerns about the T-con board and am going to keep a very close eye on any picture discrepancies and contact samsung asap so as to not over-shoot my warranty. I would recommend you do the same. A lot of people sit with a "minor" problem too long and when minor becomes major, you have no warranty to work with.

The picture on this is amazing. Others have mentioned the "Soap Opera" effect from the 120hz motion. They are not kidding. However, I watched an old (1991- HA!) movie last night that I have literally seen a dozen if not more times and I noticed sooo much more detail in it. Things like colors/prints of people's clothes, things in the background - just amazing detail in everything on screen. It was like I was watching them filming it live. (This can be slightly annoying when you see actors so vivid that they are no longer attractive :)

The caveat to this is the blur when people on screen move fast. From reading other reviews, this can be fixed to your liking in he settings and I have yet to dig deep into that yet. For new owners, this would be "MENU" Button, Select MODE, then scroll down to Picture Options, then AutoMotion Plus 120hz option. Samsungs menu setup has a PS3 menu feel to it; I found it easy to find what I was looking for.

So far so good. I am happy with the purchase.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
12/10/09 The shipper is CEVA. They were fine - item delivered exactly on time at 11am.
I then unpacked and began set up. Oddly enough, the instructions for attaching the stand are *not* in the "quick" setup guide, or in the first few pages of the book manual. Instead, they are rather deep in the manual. (Not that you need them - you just clip the stand in and screw it in, but you know, its a new TV - you want to get it right).
Since I am already familiar with standard A/V HDMI set ups, I went ahead and hooked them up after a looking over the manual. Guess what? No picture. This means I can't get to the on screen menu to see if something is set up wrong (source video, aspect ratio, brightness, etc).
So I bypassed all my other equipment and just plugged the cable directly into the TV. This time, I can get sound, but still no picture. I click "source" a few times using the buttons on the TV - when standing this close, I actually *can* see a bit of the picture - so dark, but faintly there. At this point I call Samsung direct and they do some troubleshooting(unplug tv, try again type stuff) and determine that the product is dead. They recommend a return since it is brand spanking new. So I call Amazon to request a return. They are awesome - a new one will be shipped out via CEVA and CEVA will also pick up the old tv and return it for me.
After this arrangement was made, I hopped online to search for "Samsung LN37B650 no picture troubleshooting" and low and behold there are tons of other reports on this happening - right after warranty ended. The cause is something called the A/S T-Con board. It can be bought and replaced yourself following some online how-to's. Luckily, I will not have to go through such trouble since this is a new purchase, but I will certainly keep this in mind if my TV suddenly goes black. I will mention that after reading about so many others having problems, I am debating on a full-out return. This really seems to be a bad part being put in a good TV. Samsungs website is not even acknowledging it. I may call Amazon back and cancel the swap. X Dollars is a lot to spend on an LCD when you are not feeling secure with its quality.
Updates to come on my decision and results.
 "What an upgrade!" 2009-11-27
By J. T. Carr
This Samsung replaced my 8 year old 26" Sony. I do not have a HD signal yet, but I can't imagine receiving a better picture. The old Sony weighed at least 100 pounds and I had to get my wife to help me get it out of the cabinet. This Samsung is light as a feather compared to the Sony behemoth. I have been waiting years for the LCDs to come down to my price range and I'm glad I waited. A excellent product!
 "Worth the research." 2009-11-16
By Clayton Martin (Hot Springs, AR USA)
Before buying a television with all the things I required, I read numerous reviews from several websites and dealers. It was definitely worth that research. This television has been everything I expected. Quality is definitely worth the extra price. My advice is to not let price keep you from getting a high quality television.
 "Everything I could have hoped for." 2009-11-13
By Rob P. (Wisconsin)
I am the most indecisive person in the world, and within the past 6 months of browsing HDTVs and not being able to make a decision, I finally decided to jump in and buy this TV set. I've only had it for one day, but I'll continue to update this review as time goes on to make sure people get an idea of the long term aspects of this television.
First off, this TV is perfect for homes with small to medium living spaces. I have a living room that is roughly 15 by 15 feet, and this accompanies the room perfectly. Even after I set it up, I thought to myself that 42 inches would have been a bit too overpowering. Anyways, this TV puts my old 26 inch Westinghouse to shame. Although...I think almost any TV blows away Westinghouse television sets.
Anyways, right off the bat this TV is beautiful. It lacks the 120Hz processing, but in my own personal opinion, the only time 120Hz is beneficial is if you are watching sports or documentaries (Speaking of Documentaries, Planet Earth looks absolutely incredible on this TV regardless of the 120hz). All of the games I played today off of my PS3 looked much more polished and finely detailed, and Bluray (Planet Earth) was equally as incredible. I'll likely be giving some action movies a go on this TV tomorrow night, and I'll make sure to update how the TV handles fast moving scenes. However, I have a feeling that it will be great.
Before I close this, there was a review that I read which said that the television had poor viewing angles and back lighting. I just want to claim that when the sun went down, the backlighting on the TV is not nearly how the reviewer made it out to be, and the poor viewing angles are hardly poor. Do they exist? Yes, but barely. I felt like when the image became obscured due to the viewing angle, it doesn't even matter because the angle you are viewing the screen at is so awkward.
Bottom line, I am more than pleased with my purchase, and as stated before, this makes for a great small/medium sized living room TV. Unless you get a defect, you won't regret this product.
 "Very Happpy" 2009-10-14
By Brad (Alexandria, Va.)
I bought this item to be used as a monitor for my MAC G5 Pro Computer. The physical size was determined by the amount of space I had on my desk, otherwise I would have gotten a larger one. The Samsung LN37B550 works great as a computer monitor and displays in 1920 x 1080 resolution, I can put it in sleep mode according to settings on the Apple, the picture is sharp and clear and easy on the eyes with my head just a little more than a foot away from the screen. I also have an Elgato TV card on the computer and I can watch TV in several different screen sizes which I select on the apple. Di-Def channels are displayed as such and cable analog displays as it should. No complaints. Great product for the price.
 "sound control does not work" 2009-09-12
Picture quality is perfect and much better then my $3200. Sony (2006). The Sound control is broken and will not glide up or down in volume. Control must be pushed repeatedly for proper sound placement. Not enough quality control.
Overall, this is a good TV. Its got a good picture and good sound quality. The only real reason I gave it a 4 vs. 5 is it could have a couple more inputs and could autodetect source signal like some other brands.
 "Great picture and reasonable price" 2009-11-13
By jray (usa)
I was looking for a smaller than 40 inch set for a bedroom and this tv is the perfect size. Relatively thin so perfect for wall mounting and the picture is excellent. While not up to the LN52A650 by Samsung (and nothing really is) for the price you will not find a better picture than this set. The menu's are easy to navigate. Operation is flawless and with 3 HDMI inputs its got plenty for most applications. This set is less in cost than the 550 model mainly because it doesnt have the side inputs which for me i dont use in the bedroom and would rather save the $100 or so odd dollars. If you wanted them later you could easily run a wallplate with them to a another location which actually makes for a cleaner install. Samsung is the best picture out there and is worth a few extra dollars. I fully expect many years of trouble free service from this set as thats been my experience with this brand. Also register online for their warranty and they add 3 months to the end of it at no cost just for signing up. Would buy this set again.
 "Very good purchase" 2009-10-29
I bought this TV for my living room. As the room isn't too big ( 10' by 12') I went for 37" TV. It arrived very quick, within 3 days since the order had been placed. (Delivered by UPS, twice missed me home, had to pick it up myself from UPS facility as they would have sent it back after third delivery attempt).
TV is very easy to install and navigate through all the options, works perfectly so far:) I'm really enjoying the quality of this product as I can see the channels in HDformat, the picture is really clear and perfect. Connecting DVD player was not a problem, so now I also watch movies etc on this big screen. Highly recommended for the price.
I'm very happy with this purchase. The picture quality is very good with a couple, minor exceptions. Even though the TV comes with a "set" normal, picture, I'm still learning to adjust it for even better picture (color on faces too much I feel). After 2 weeks viewing I still haven't called in cable company to "set up" and give me HD.
This tells how much I'm satisfied now with the set. The only thing I don't like is the remote dosen't have the "main" buttons in consumer friendly position. ie. the mute buttom, the change back channel button are somewhat hidden when they should be put in a easy position on remote. I do recommend this TV.
